Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
