This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together resides a intense meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
