19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 championships have been achieved on hard surfaces

A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his initial championship for over two years with success over opponent Moutet in the competition title decider.

The athlete, a ex- number one, has had a challenging period, managing just one win at the major tournaments and experiencing a setback at the American major.

The player's varied form on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serving in especial - led to him falling of the elite rankings and finally splitting with long-time mentor Cervara.

Currently training with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, he has steadily advanced in the recent weeks - culminating in a tightly fought competitive win over challenger Moutet.

This marks the player's first trophy following the Rome competition and maiden on a hard court from spring of the previous year.

Victory also signifies he has achieved twenty-one championships at 21 different events.

"For the first time I have attended a competition with my two daughters together, so to get a trophy is particularly special," stated tennis professional Medvedev.

"This championship is in honour of my child Victoria, because the maiden victory I won when my older daughter Alisa was delivered was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his last six title deciders, featuring in that event earlier this year.

His counter-punching play style and recurring reactions on the playing surface had led observers to doubt if his ability to perform at the top level was over.

However the player has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to come to the net and perform assertively, reinforced by an improved serving game.

Medvedev recovered from a disadvantage in the initial set against the difficult Moutet, taking four of the last five exchanges to take the lead.

The pair traded breaks in the middle set before the challenger, bidding for his first tour championship, seized the initiative to push for a decider.

The opponent rescued 4 early break points in a close final set before the champion secured a break to 15 to serve for the match.

Appropriately, the winner earned the title with a shot at the net area, with his opponent unable to manage a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
